My First Leadership Retreat!! (Retreat Blog)

This retreat was a blast! It was fun bonding with the whole leadership like a family and being able to meet our chaperons which used to be in leadership. The day started out when I arrived to the school, I forgot my mailbox inside the class so I ran to retrieve it. It turns out, it was found with the rest of my envelopes after I was about to design my new one.We moved all our bags to the garage then eventually upstairs as we settled in. We then began our Session 1 which was reviewing our groups strengths and weaknesses and us individually. Then the Quarter 1 review. Session 2 was rearranged to be our ISA job planning and for our Period, door decorations. Before session 2, we had lunch. After our planning, we got to have a break and swim. I forgot if it was the first break or the second, but Deriecka got stung by a jellyfish. Since then I was scared to go in the water especially because if I got deeper, I don't know how to swim. Then, we went crab hunting and found a huge one compared to the smallest ones we found later after that day. During night time, we had Breakouts, in which my group (boys) were rehearsing orientation dance with Korey and Laila. We didn't do Personal Interviews or Memory Jars this year. Then we had dinner and after that we had Talent Show practice, Period 1 chopped, then it was lights out.
The second day, we woke up early to have breakfast. I then finished all of my bucket filling messages (magic notes) Session 5 which was supposed to be Q3 planning, we did both Q3 and Q4 planning at once. Then we had another break so I went swimming again, but I had sand stuck in my hair. Then we had lot cleaning, our Period chose the back where we picked up leaves, and sides of the house. That took a lot of time, so we had yet another break. Then lunch, then free time. I don't think this is completely in order as I don't memorize the day 2 schedule. We rotated our breakout activity, and this time we were with Jolene. We worked on our cape of self esteem and that included our short, mid, long term goals. I made 3 short, 4 long, and 3 mid in this order. Then we had dinner. Then after that we had time left over from lunch and made small changes to our talent show cheer. Then we had our talent show, we won 2nd place. Then we went in for chopped, we made rice crispies and a smore bar. Even though it's already a smore, Mr. Ing still let us make smores later on after chopped. We also received 2nd place for that as well.
The third and final day there, we had breakfast once again. Packed our bags, and eventually moved them to the garage when we were cleaning inside the house. We had Breakout sessions again but this time with Shayna. We played Jenga with the #'s listed on the blocks and those were questions listed. We had another short break. Then lunch, took pictures, and learned how to play flag football. Then after that another 1 hr. break and we finally cleaned up. Took the bus, and arrived at Ilima.
My highlights for our retreat is that we got to increase mostly our period's bond and with the rest of leadership. We were able to figure out what we were gonna do for our plans with creativity and great themes. I enjoyed the retreat and had long breaks in which we could we swim at anytime we wanted to. We got second place in our Chopped and Talent Show. We had successful sessions and breakouts and I got to meet Remy, a local Peacock. I got to meet the previous Leadership students which included 2 Sophomores and 2 Seniors. Even though we did a lot of work at the retreat, it wasn't boring and it didn't consume a lot of time, I especially can't say that after getting hour long breaks. My lowlights are that time passed so fast and I already miss being there. We also ran into some drama around the second day. The last lowlight was our chopped, even though we did everything fine and how we were supposed to, our food didn't have a lot of taste and wasn't as good as it was supposed to be.
My lesson learned during that retreat is not only working as a team, but trying your best to be very creative. We needed Teamwork to think up idea's for our planning, such as how in door decorations, for winter we thought of Winter Wonderland and Snow in Hawaii, as for Halloween, Crime Scene, Nightmares, and Cabin in the Woods. I forgot which Halloween theme was voted for already. Creativity was used to make these themes more unique and exciting. Snow In Hawaii is somewhat creative because it never snows in Hawaii and during Winter time it usually always snows in other places. For Halloween, Crime Scene and Cabin in the Woods are really creative because Crime Scene is like a mystery where there's blood and you have to find out what happened. Cabin in the Woods is somewhat self-explanatory, but if we will make it like the movie then that's too much because there are a lot of different monsters/killers. Nightmares I am not very certain about, I believe that it is about the horror that can take place, like people dying, blood, and scary monsters.
The final paragraph is about a quote that we have to explain the significance of. The meaning of this quote "Leadership is not about ability, it's about responsibility." This quote means that, having just ability won't make you qualified as a leader, being a leader means that you have to accept and deal with the challenges that arise and make sure that what's done is done. You can't just be like "I can do this and you can't, so I should be the leader." You have to be ready to accept the challenges and that means that leadership isn't all about being able to boss people around, in fact if you say that, then all I have to say is that you'd make a horrible leader by saying that. As a leader, you shouldn't be afraid to make decisions and you should make them wisely.
